Australian Public Transport Travel Cards for each State

Various areas in Australia have their own prepaid travel cards for using the Public Transport services in their area. They are paid for in advance, and normally need tapping or swiping when travelling, with the card balance being adjusted depending on each recorded trip. Automatic top up by credit card or bank account is common.

The following Travel Cards are common ones for each State, or part of a State.

 

The NSW Travel card is called OPAL

Whether you catch public transport every day, or only now and then, you’re better off travelling with an Opal card. Once you complete eight paid journeys between Monday and Sunday with an Opal card, your fares for the rest of the week are half-price.

The SE QLD Travel card is called GoCard

go card is TransLink’s electronic ticket to fast, easy and convenient travel. Use go card on all TransLink bus, train (including Airtrain), ferry and tram services in greater Brisbane, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, and Gold Coast region.
TransLink services operate in South East Queensland, including Brisbane, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast; Cairns, and Mackay.

The Adelaide (South Australia) Travel Card is called a MetroCard

Metrocard gives access to cheaper fares than singletrip tickets, and has easy recharge and auto recharge facilities. If you are a visitor, don’t travel often or don’t want to use a metrocard, you can still buy a Singletrip or Daytrip ticket from either the bus driver or ticket vending machines on all trains and trams.

The Tasmania Travel card is called a Greencard

Greencard holders claim a 20% discount and capped urban fares by using the Greencard for travel. Greencard simplifies public transport by making it easier and quicker to board a bus without the right change by acting as a digital wallet for fare credit.

The Victoria Travel card is called a Myki card

The Myki card is a reusable travel card for trains, trams and buses in Melbourne and regional Victorian centres.
By 2018/19 it is expected that existing green cards will have been phased out, and new-look cards will be the only card across the network.

The WA Travel card is called Smartrider

SmartRider is a reusable smart card, which allows easy, hassle free travel on Transperth services. Most passengers use the Standard SmartRider card and take advantage of a 15 per cent discount off the cash fare.
The Carer, Aged and Disability Support Pensioner SmartRider allows you will be able to travel for free during most off peak times.
