The Australian Bureau of Statistics produces a report each year showing the Average Earnings and hours worked by Specific Occupations.
Unfortunately this report is pretty old by the time it is released, for example: Todays release (July 2010) is for the August 2008 figures.
However, to give an idea, a few examples, including the highest and lowest paid occupations:
Aug 2008 Hourly rates (with estimated May 2010 in Brackets)
Highest $76.50 ($85.70) Medical practitioners $57.40 ($65.30) Financial brokers, dealers, investment advisers Median $29.20 ($32.70) Financial and insurance clerks $28.50 ($31.90) Prison and security officers $28.50 ($31.90) Numerical clerks $27.80 ($31.10) Accounting clerks and bookkeepers Lowest $18.70 ($20.90) Checkout operators and office cashiers $17.30 ($19.40) Hairdressers
The actual report, showing 133 occupations is titled: 6306001, Employee Earnings and Hours, Australia, August 2008 (cat. no. 6306.0)
The estimated 2010 rates are calculated based on average wages having risen by 12% between Aug 2008 and May 2010, and using that 12% rise added to the Aug 2008 figures.
Arts professionals work the shortest hours at 33.2 hrs per week for $43.90 (2010 $49.20) per hour. Truck drivers work the longest hours at 47.5 hrs per week for $26.80 (2010 $30.00)per hour.
