Eating Out in Australia

Eating Out in Australia

We have the normal Fast Food Places, MacDonald’s, Hungry Jack/Burger King, Subway, Red Rooster, Kentucky, Indian, Thai & Chinese Restaurants, etc.

Pizza Places abound, and almost always special offers at about $5 or $6 for a large Pizza.

Many people eat out at a local RSL club, where reasonably good food can be purchased for a pretty low price. Examples such as Rump Steak and Chips with Salad for about $6 are not uncommon.

Many people comment that Indian Food is very different in Australia, as there are at least two definite styles of Indian Food, and one is commonly called “English Indian”.

The “English Indian” is not very commonly available in Australia (although there is Birmingham inspired Spice Avenue Balti Restaurant in the Brisbane Bayside area).

Another common comment is that restaurants tend to close a lot earlier in Australia, than they do in the UK. This may vary, but I do hear this comment from a fair number of new arrivals, so it is something to be aware of.

Being in Queensland, it is something that is quite normal, as many Queenslanders are early risers, to do things before it gets too hot in the day, and therefore tend to eat what the British may call an early dinner.

There are various chains of Restaurants in Australia, these are just a few of them:

  • Sizzler : For Steak and Salad. You order and pay at the front desk, then you are given a table, and you eat as much as you like from the Salad Bar. The steaks are a minimal extra cost to the salad bar price.
  • Fasta Pasta : At 36 locations in Australia, serving fresh Pasta and sauces.
  • Hogs Breath Cafe : 70 restaurants serving a good steak.
  • Lone Star Steakhouse : 12 Locations (I assumed there were more as I have lived near one in both NSW & QLD) serving Texas style steaks
