New Education Fees to be charged to 457 Visa Holders in South Australia

From January 2017, newly arriving 457 visa holders will be required to contribute to the cost of educating their children in government schools. They will no longer be fully subsidised by the State Government.

From 1 January 2018, this will also apply to ALL 457 visa holders.

2017 Education Contribution Fees:

The annual contribution payable by a family in South Australia on a 457 visa for 2017 would be:

  • $5,100 for each primary school student
  • $6,100 for each high school student

This amount would be charged for the eldest child in a family, with the fees for all siblings attracting a 10% discount.

However, the amount payable would be based on family circumstances, with an exemption for those with a total family income under $57,000. The full fee will be payable at an income of $77,000, for a family with one child.

The move brings South Australia into line with WA, NSW and the ACT.

It is estimated the new fee requirement will generate more than $11 million in extra revenue for the state of South Australia over the next four years.

The minimum exemption for families earning under $57,000 may not be utilised very much as the minimum wage for 457 Visa entitlement is $53,900.  Most would probably be earning above that threshold.
