Australia’s Population is continuing to Grow

During the year ending March 2010 Australia’s population grew by an estimated 403,100 people to reach 22,272,000. An increase of 1.8%.

60% of the growth was from net overseas migration with 40% being from natural increase (births minus deaths).

The individual State populations have grown as follows:

  • 2.3% Western Australia up to 2,286,100
  • 2.2% Queensland up to 4,498,900
  • 2.0% Victoria up to 5,529,400
  • 1.9% Northern Territory up to 228,500
  • 1.8% Australian Capital Territory up to 357,700
  • 1.6% New South Wales up to 7,221,000
  • 1.3% South Australia up to 1,640,700
  • 0.9% Tasmania up to 507,100

Queenslands Population reaches 4,444,444 – Oct 2009
At 4.44am on Tuesday 20th October 2009, the population of Queensland is estimated to have reached 4,444,444.

Queenslands population has recently been increasing at an average of 2,167 new residents every week.

The growth is attributed to:

  • 46.7% overseas migration
  • 35.6% natural increase
  • 17.7% interstate migration

Australian Population Growth in 2008 (revised 6/09)

  • Queensland an increase of 106,700 or 2.5% up to 4,349,500
  • Victoria an increase of 102,400 or 1.9% up to 5,364,800
  • New South Wales an increase of 97,500 or 1.4% up to 7,041,400
  • Western Australia an increase of 66,000 or 3.1% up to 2,204,000
  • South Australia an increase of 18,500 or 1.2% up to 1,612,000
  • Australian Capital Territory an increase of 5,800 or 1.7% up to 347,800
  • Tasmania an increase of 4,900 or 1.0% up to 500,300
  • Northern Territory an increase of 4,200 or 2.0% up to 221,700
  • Total Australia an increase of 406,100 or 1.9% up to 21,644,000
