State Schools in Australia are considered to be basically free. There are however various “voluntary” contributions of maybe a few hundred dollars per year.

Schooling lasts for 13 years, from preparatory to senior secondary. School is compulsory until at least the age of 16. www.studyinaustralia.gov.au
