In 2009 the suicide rate in Australia was slightly higher than it was in England, with rates of 9.69 and 8.78 per 100,000 population respectively.

Rates of suicide in Australia varied between the States during the 2005-2009 period from 7.9 (NSW) to 20.1 (NT) per 100,000.

The highest suicide rate in Australia is in the Male 85+ age group with a rate of almost 30 per 100,000.

Female suicide rates are highest in the 50-54 years age group at 8.8 per 100,000 and lowest in the 15-19 years age group at 3.4 per 100,000.
