Australian Education NAPLAN 2009 Reading Results

The following results show the percentage of students from each State that achieved the minimum education standard in the 2009 NAPLAN tests.

The results also show the average age of students tested, and the number of years schooling that they would have undertaken.

It is important to note that Queensland is the odd one out in all the States, with a shorter period at school for most children in State Schools, and having a younger average age.

Year 3 – Reading

All students had 3 years 4 months schooling except Queensland with only 2 years and 4 months

  • 95.6% NSW : age 8 years 7 months
  • 95.2% Vic : age 8 years 9 months
  • 94.7% ACT : age 8 years 8 months
  • 93.6% SA : age 8 years 7 months
  • 93.3% Tas : age 8 years 11 months (Oldest)
  • 92.0% Qld : age 8 years 1 month (Youngest)
  • 91.2% WA : age 8 years 5 months
  • 68.6% NT : age 8 years 6 months

Year 5 – Reading

All students had 5 years 4 months schooling except Queensland with only 4 years and 4 months

  • 94.3 % Vic : average age 10 years 9 months
  • 94.2 % ACT : average age 10 years 8 months
  • 93.6 % NSW : average age 10 years 7 months
  • 91.7 % Aust : average age 10 years 6 months
  • 91.1 % SA : average age 10 years 7 months
  • 90.4 % Tas : average age 10 years 11 months (Oldest)
  • 89.0 % Qld : average age 10 years 1 month (Youngest)
  • 89.0 % WA : average age 10 years 5 months
  • 65.8 % NT : average age 10 years 6 months

Year 7 – Reading

All students had 7 years 4 months schooling except Queensland with only 6 years and 4 months

  • 95.5 % ACT : average age 12 years 8 months
  • 95.3 % Vic : average age 12 years 9 months
  • 94.8 % NSW : average age 12 years 7 months
  • 93.6 % SA : average age 12 years 6 months
  • 92.7 % Qld : average age 12 years 1 month (Youngest)
  • 92.5 % Tas : average age 12 years 10 months (Oldest)
  • 92.1 % WA : average age 12 years 2 months
  • 70.8 % NT : average age 12 years 5 months

Year 9 – Reading

All students had 9 years 4 months schooling except Queensland with only 8 years and 4 months

  • 94.3 % Vic : average age 14 years 9 months
  • 94.0 % ACT : average age 14 years 8 months
  • 93.5 % NSW : average age 14 years 7 months
  • 92.2 % SA : average age 14 years 6 months
  • 91.2 % Tas : average age 14 years 10 months (Oldest)
  • 89.9 % WA : average age 14 years 0 months (Youngest)
  • 89.8 % Qld : average age 14 years 1 month
  • 69.1 % NT : average age 14 years 5 months
