Job Vacancies in Australia in May 2008. from

- Total job vacancies increased in May 2008 to 183,600, up 1.1% from
February 2008.
- Job vacancies in the private sector increased to 164,400 up 1.1% from
February 2008.
- Job vacancies in the public sector increased to 19,200 up 1.0% from
February 2008.
Melbourne Rental shortage getting worse.
- Latest figures from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) show that
vacancy rates are now down to 0.6% in some areas, and will fuel continued rent
increases in the Melbourne area.
Four years ago the "inner-city" vacancy rate was 6.2%, but it is now 0.6%. The
vacancy rate for Melbourne as a whole, is currently 1%, which is substantially
below the 3% that is considered the ideal rate.

The number of employees involved in industrial disputes in the March quarter
2008 was 42,300, an increase from 23,700 in the December quarter 2007.
There were 42,800 working days lost due to industrial disputation in the
March quarter 2008, an increase from 24,400 in the December quarter 2007.
