But sometimes a simple quick guide can be useful, especially when we need to look at three parts to this in Australia compared to only two in the UK.
Australia:
Car Rego
Compulsory Third party Insurance (injury only)
Optional Comprehensive or Third party property damage, fire and theft.
UK
Car Tax
Car Insurance
How do the costs compare ?
It was renewing my car insurance, last week, that made me do this post today... I will explain.
My renewal for comprehensive insurance came in at $533. I shopped around and found it for $400.29. Out of curiosity I checked to see what they charged for my old address down in New South Wales, as I am now in Queensland. For NSW it was $900.
In the UK, you have the advantage of websites that can check many insurers at one time, here in Australia, we do not yet have that ability, so you need to do your own legwork, or use a broker, like we used to do in the UK.
To compare total costs, these are the figures for one of our cars, based on our current QLD address, and our last UK address:
Combined Registration and Insurances:
Australia: $1,059 (or 79% of average full time male wages) for tax and Insurance
UK: £446 (or 84% of average full time male wages) for tax and Insurance
Not much real difference from the average pay packet, for my two living locations, with similar cars.
But remember, location, type of car etc can all make a large difference.
