Registered: 25 Jan : 16:58 | I am an old Pommy who was so delighted when the Elephant opened in Brisbane. The great West Australian originator, (now turning in his grave), had already built the one British Pub in Perth, which I enjoyed while visiting my 'in-laws' some years ago. I was a regular at The Elephant at lunchtimes during three managers tenure, 1-2 days a week until the "downfall".(battered chips!). In those days the ground floor main Bar was full of Diners and interesting characters while you served great British Beer. It was difficult to get a seat at 12.00 pm, lunchtime. A while ago, after the Fortitude Valley Railway Station opened again after alterations, I chanced a visit at 12.00 o'clock hoping for lunch. I was shocked and disappointed. The previously thriving Bar had one 'old soak' who was always there before, at the end of the Bar. Poor lonely old fellah, drinking on his own, every day, without even a Bar-Tender to talk with! On asking him where "everyone one is," he just threw his thumb over his shoulder. Being now on a mobility scooter, I followed the direction he gave: to discover "the great new Aussie Pub beer garden". You can no longer claim to be "a Brit-Pub" in my opinion with these new furnishings and crass atmosphere. Also like the 'Irish Pubs' you do not sell Genuine Irish beer, the Stuff you sell is made down the coast! If you have an open mind you will Import genuine Murphy's Stout which used to be stocked by The Irish pub on Brunswick St. You have LOST your British ambience. I am not against Beer Gardens, yours is not furnished correctly. British Pubs are for Young and Old; yours is aimed now aimed specifically at youth.
PS: Can you tell me the British Beers you now stock? Regards Peter Wignall

There is an outdoor bar with seperate smoking area, very thoughtful. Then a huge general lounge-bar further back. My possie is the outdoor bar, sitting at an old barrel drinking my favourite English beer, Speckled Hen. For lunch or snacks in the beer garden my favourite is: a bowl of chips with aioli, great value. There are mini-pizzas, sea food, burgers etc. There's a good selection of British beers but I would be thrilled to taste again a Murphies Stout imported from Ireland. All the 'Irish' beers in Brisbane are FALSE, brewed in Australia! This pub is on the Riverside near the Stockmarket. There are other P-n-W's in Brisbane without the same choice of Beer.
