Car Registration in Australia

Vehicle Registration costs in Australia

Vehicle Registration costs

All vehicles need to be registered annually, in the same way as British vehicles have to pay for Road Fund Licence.

Here it is called registration or REGO.

The costs vary between the States, and the vehicle engines sizes

Current prices can be found at:

  • QLD Queensland Motor Vehicle Registration fees
  • QLD Queensland Online Motor Vehicle Registration Quotation
  • NSW New South Wales Motor Vehicle Registration fees
  • Vic Victoria Motor Vehicle Registration fees
  • WA WA Motor Vehicle Registration fees

Queensland Motor Car registration fees
    1 July 200830 June 2009
12 Months registration period: (Rego and TIF)
    • $216.25 13 cylinders or electric
    • $263.00 4 cylinders
    • $380.35 5 or 6 Cylinders
    • $514.80 7 or 8 Cylinders
The above fees do not include compulsory third party insurance.

The rates from July 1st 2009 will be about 20% higher.
    • 1-3 Cylinder = $206.35 Rego and $45.80 TIF + $340 CTP = $592.15
    • 4 Cylinder = $262.45 Rego and $45.80 TIF + $340 CTP = $648.25

    • 9-12 Cylinder = $682.50 Rego and $45.80 TIF + $340 CTP = $1,068.30

WA Motor Car registration fees

    12 Months registration period:
    • $16.00 per 100kg +
    • $12.15 Recording fee +

Compulsory Third Party Insurance

Third Party Insurance (CTP) is compulsory in Australia, and to ensure it is taken out, you MUST pay the premium at the same time as the annual rego fee for the vehicle.

This CTP is NOT the same as the normal British Third Party Insurance

More details on this at: Car Insurance in Australia

  • In Tasmania the CTP insurance is provided as part of your vehicle registration fee (called MAIB Premium).
  • In NSW, you take out a CTP policy, and the insurer advises the Motor Registration office that the premium is paid, and you can then register your vehicle.
  • In QLD, you pay the CTP premium to the Department of Motor Transport at the same time as your car registration fee.
  • In Victoria, you pay the TAC charge at the same time as you pay the Registration (TAC = Transport Accident Commission ).
  • In Western Australia........ tba.
  • In South Australia, you pay the CTP premium at the same time as you pay the registration.

An example of Car Insurance and Registration/Road Tax comparison.
UK has this in two parts: Car Insurance and Road tax

Australia has it in three parts: Rego, CTP, and Insurance

An example of one of my cars is:
    $263 Registration.
    $308 CTP
$525 Comprehensive Insurance ($10,000 agreed value)

    Or in English....
    $263 Car Tax
    $833 Insurance

CTP is a compulsory Third Party Insurance, and in most States, if not all, has to be arranged with or before your Rego.

CTP cover is not included in the comp cover, so it is not paid twice.

CTP only covers personal injury, it DOES NOT cover damage to other property, cars etc.
