Australia's population has now exceeded 22 million, and the political parties are discussing the countries future population count, with some figures being estimated at 35 million by 2050.
A growth of 2.1% per year (the current rate)will give us a population of 51.5 million by 2050. A growth of 1.15% will give us 35 million by 2050.
Figures released from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the population exceeded 22 million in September 2009.
This was a growth rate of 451,900 people or 2.1% in the year.
The breakdown of this figure was:
297,400 Net overseas migration to Australia, 9,000 higher than 2008.
154,500 from natural Net Birth (296,300) / Death (141,800) increases
The State with the fastest growing population was WA with a 2.9% increase up to 2.2 million. This was followed by QLD with a 2.7% increase up to 4.5 million. One of the slower growing states was New South Wales with only a 1.7% increase up to 7 million.
