              The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the latest average Australian wage figures on 12th April 2010.

              These figures relate to salaries and wages paid in November 2009, and the following are the Male and Female Full Time wages, for that month, detailed for each State.

              Male Total Weekly Gross Earnings

                $1,514.20 Australian Capital Territory
                $1,381.60 New South Wales
                $1,365.90 Northern Territory
                $1,379.50 Queensland
                $1,243.00 South Australia
                $1,146.30 Tasmania
                $1,334.20 Victoria
                $1,539.00 Western Australia

              Female Total Weekly Gross earnings

                $1,313.70 Australian Capital Territory
                $1,138.30 New South Wales
                $1,096.40 Northern Territory
                $1,064.80 Queensland
                $1,018.90 South Australia
                $ 997.90 Tasmania
                $1,062.10 Victoria
                $1,117.00 Western Australia

              As a guide to what is included in the term Average Wages, the ABS issues a guide with the 6302.0 - Average Weekly Earnings, which shows a detailed description.

              A brief description to help is:

              All wage and salary earners who received pay for the reference period are included, except for:

              Australian permanent defence forces
              Agriculture, forestry and fishing employees
              employees of private households
              employees of overseas embassies, consulates, etc
              employees based outside Australia
              directors who are not paid a salary
              proprietors/partners of unincorporated businesses
              self-employed persons

              UK wages reported by the HM Revenue & Customs PAYE records, and shown in the 2009 Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings at www.statistics.gov.uk were:

              Median weekly earnings in April 2009:

              • £531 Full-time male employees.
              • £426 Full-time female employees.


              10% of full-time employees earned more than £971pw.
              10% of full-time employees earned less than £271pw.

              Median full-time weekly earnings in specific areas were:

              • £627 London.
              • £436 North East England.
              • £514 South East England.


              Median weekly full time wages by occupation groups were:

              • £1,031 Health professionals
              • £745 Corporate managers
              • £698 Science and technology professionals
              • £278 Sales occupations
