There is a THREE licence stage:

  • Learner Licence
  • Provisional Licence
  • Full Licence

Learner Licence

In July 2007 the minimum age that a learner driver could get a licence was lowered to 16 years of age

At the same time the learner licence period was extended to a minimum of one year.
L-plates are now compulsory.

Learner drivers under 25 years of age must gain 100 hours of certified supervised driving experience recorded in a learner logbook before being eligible to apply for a provisional licence.

Provisional Licence
After passing the practical driving test, and having reached the age of 17, the driver will be issued with a Provisional Licence, allowing them to drive unaccompanied.
P-plates are now compulsory. (Red P plate for P1 and Green P plate for P2)

If you are under 25 years of age, you must hold a P1 provisional licence and display red P-plates for one year before progressing to a P2 provisional licence.

If you are 25 years of age or over, you will commence with a P2 provisional licence and must display green P-plates.

New Drivers under 23 years will normally have to drive with P Plates for THREE Years. 1 year on P1 and 2 years on P2.
