Learner Licence In July 2007 the minimum age that a learner driver could get a licence was lowered to 16 years of age At the same time the learner licence period was extended to a minimum of one year. L-plates are now compulsory. Learner drivers under 25 years of age must gain 100 hours of certified supervised driving experience recorded in a learner logbook before being eligible to apply for a provisional licence. Provisional Licence After passing the practical driving test, and having reached the age of 17, the driver will be issued with a Provisional Licence, allowing them to drive unaccompanied. P-plates are now compulsory. (Red P plate for P1 and Green P plate for P2) If you are under 25 years of age, you must hold a P1 provisional licence and display red P-plates for one year before progressing to a P2 provisional licence. If you are 25 years of age or over, you will commence with a P2 provisional licence and must display green P-plates.
