The Labor party has announced that the Education Tax Refund (ETR) scheme may be expanded to cover school uniforms from July 2011.
If so, this means that parents will be able to claim up to 50 per cent of uniform costs as well as other education expenses such as textbooks, computers and tools.
Parents will be able to claim for uniforms bought next financial year (ie: July 2011 to June 2012) and the tax refund would be paid in the 2012-13 financial year.
This is of course subject to Labor being voted back in, AND, the policy not being reversed ....
And of course the claim limit is not increasing to cover this extra item, so if you spend the full limit on Computers, there is nothing left for uniforms.
The 2009-2010 income tax year annual limit for the ETR is:
Primary School children - $780 per year, allowing a maximum claim of $390
Secondary School children - $1,558 per year, allowing a maximum claim of $779
