The question asked on a recent poll, (still running at 3rd Sept 2010) was:
Comparing costs to Australian wages, do you feel Australia is more expensive than the UK ?
The results so far were:
52.78% Yes. Australia does seem more expensive
47.22% No, Australia does not seem more expensive
The result so far is so close that it made me wonder what the difference is between the two groups.
A few questions to some local people gave me the following answers.
1: Supermarket shopping is expensive compared to the UK. This I did realise, but as we avoid supermarkets whenever we can, this doesn't affect us too much
2: The price of meat is expensive. This did surprise me until I found that again they used the supermarkets for their meat shopping. A supermarket can often be 3 times the cost at a butcher.
3: The price of fruit and vegetables are expensive. Some people do not look out for the In Season produce, and pay high prices for the out of season items. They also use the expensive Supermarkets, rather then the fruit shops which tend to be cheaper.
4: The choice and price of pre-prepared foods is not as good and is more expensive than in the UK. Again I do not disagree with that.
5: Fresh food at Butchers and Fruit shops is often better value for money than in the UK.
Conclusion:
Those that answered "No, Australia does not seem more expensive" are more likely to use Butchers and Fruit and Veg shops.
Those that answered "Yes. Australia does seem more expensive " are more likely to use Supermarkets for all their shopping, and buy more pre-prepared convenience food.
There are other aspects to the costs of living, other than food, but this one seems to be the most commonly discussed cost.
