People living in Hobart earn the highest average income in Tasmania. However, 6 of the top 10 high income regions are located outside the state's capital, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Areas outside of inner Hobart recorded an average total income of $47,389 in 2007-08, where as inner Hobart recorded an average total income of $46,051.
West Coast ($43,377) and inner Launceston ($40,026) recorded the next highest average incomes, along with part of Kingborough in the Greater Hobart area ($39,786), rounded out the top five .
Other areas to record average total incomes higher than the state average of $37,718 included part of Meander Valley ($39,329), Clarence ($39,070) and part of Burnie ($38,369).
These data include income from wages and salaries, own unincorporated business, investment, and superannuation and annuities, but do not include government pensions and allowances.
