Average Male Working hours

The average hours that a Full time male in Australia works is shown by the following percentages against hours groups.

February 2010

  • 24.6% work between 35 and 39 hours per week

  • 14.3% work between 45 and 49 hours per week

The percentage is based against the total of all full time males working 35+ hours per week.

Annual Leave:
Employers must generally give all permanent full-time employees at least:

4 weeks paid annual leave (5 weeks for shift workers)
10 days paid personal/carer's leave per year
2 days unpaid carer's leave (when needed)
2 days paid compassionate leave (when needed)
12 months unpaid parental leave.

This is effective from 1st January 2010.

Note: Annual leave and paid personal/carer's leave accumulates over time.

Public Holidays:
Employees who would usually work on a public holiday are entitled to a day off with pay (subject to reasonable requests to work).

Public holiday pay for employees who work on a public holiday depends on whether they're covered by an award or agreement that provides for penalty rates to be paid for work on public holidays.

The Retail Award for example states:
Work on a public holiday must be compensated by either:
(i) payment at the rate of an additional 150%;
(ii) an equivalent day or equivalent time off instead without loss of pay; or
(iii) an additional day or equivalent time as annual leave.
