In 2009 the suicide rate in Australia was slightly higher than it was in England, with rates of 9.69 and 8.78 per 100,000 population respectively.

Rates of suicide in Australia varied between the States during the 2005-2009 period from 7.9 (NSW) to 20.1 (NT) per 100,000.

Although there were 2,132 suicides in Australia in 2009, this is a higher figure than it was in 2006, with 2005 and 2006 rates being 2,102 and 1,799 respectively. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare 2009 ISBN: 9781740249119

The highest suicide rate in Australia is in the Male 85+ age group with a rate of almost 30 per 100,000.

Female suicide rates are highest in the 50-54 years age group at 8.8 per 100,000 and lowest in the 15-19 years age group at 3.4 per 100,000.
