Murder and Attempted Murder

In 2008, the Australian rates for these offence categories were:
Murder, 1.2 victims per 100,000 persons
Attempted murder, 1.1 victims per 100,000 persons

In 2008, the United Kingdom rates for these offence categories were:
Murder, 1.1 victims per 100,000 persons
Attempted murder, 1.0 victims per 100,000 persons

Assault

Australia:

There were 170,277 victims of assault in Australia

That works out at about: 1,353 assaults per 100,000 population

UK:

There were 903,993 offences of violence against the person recorded by the police in 2008/09
www.homeoffice.gov.uk
That works out at about: 4,519 assaults per 100,000 population

Note:  There may be differences in the definition of Assault between the two countries.

  • A breakdown of assault figures in each Australian State is:
    • NT: 2,393.34 assaults per 100,000 population – 37% identified a family member as the offender.
    • NSW: 1,143.26 assaults per 100,000 population – 29% identified family members as the offender.
    • SA: 1,071.37 assaults per 100,000 population – 25% of the victims knew their offender.
    • WA: 972.69 assaults per 100,000 population – n/a
    • TAS: 753.52 assaults per 100,000 population – 65% knew the offender.
    • ACT: 664.45 assaults per 100,000 population – 55% knew the offender.
    • QLD: 452.34 assaults per 100,000 population – 49% of the victims knew their offender.
    • VIC: 402.80 assaults per 100,000 population – 44% reported knowing their offender.

Motor Vehicle Theft

Australia:
In 2008 68,277 Motor Vehicle Thefts were recorded in Australia.  ie: 319 victims per 100,000 persons – www.ausstats.abs.gov.au

UK:
In 2005 199,531 cars were stolen in England, Scotland and Wales.  ie: about 330 victims per 100,000 population –  www.homeoffice.gov.uk

Data for the same year in each country is still being looked for.
