Education in Darwin and Northern Territory Australia

The Department of Education and Training administers 150 government schools with total enrolments of approximately 33,000 students in the Northern Territory.

School is compulsory, from the age of 6, and up to the age of 15.

Many children do however undertake schooling prior to the age of 6 and the Senior, year 11 and 12, schooling.

There are 4 terms in each school year.

Starting School

Children who turn four on or by 30 June 2008 may begin in Preschool at the
beginning of Term 1, 2008

Children who turn five on or by 30 June 2008 may begin in Transition at the
beginning of Term 1, 2008

Junior Schooling

Junior school is Preschool to Year 6 (Approx ages: 3 to 11)

Middle School

The Middle Years of Schooling are Years 7 to 9, (Approx ages: 11 – 14)

Senior Schooling

The Senior Years of schooling are Years 10 to 12 (Approx. ages: 14 – 17) but Year 10 is considered to be a period of transition into Senior Years.
