What happens when you reach 12 Demerit Points in Queensland
If you hold a Queensland open licence you may receive a warning letter when you gain at least 7 demerit points in a 3 year period.
If 12 or more demerit points are recorded against your traffic history in a 3 year period, you will have to choose between:
- having your open licence suspended for a requisite period
- agreeing to continue driving under a period of good behaviour for 1 year.
Fines and Demerit Points in Queensland at September 2017
$168 plus 1 point: Driving less than 13 km/h over the speed limit
$252 plus 3 point: Driving at least 13 km/h, but not more than 20 km/h, over the speed limit
$420 plus 4 point: Driving more than 20 km/h, but not more than 30 km/h, over the speed limit
$588 plus 6 point: Driving more than 30 km/h, but not more than 40 km/h, over the speed limit
$1177 plus 8 point: Driving more than 40km/h over the speed limit
$378 plus 3 point: Driver failing to ensure a passenger at least 16 years wears a seat belt properly adjusted and fastened
$378 plus 3 point: Driver failing to ensure a passenger at least 16 years occupies seating position fitted with seatbelt
$378 plus 3 point: Driver of a vehicle using a mobile phone (other than in a parked vehicle)
$100 plus 2 point: Failing to keep left on a road (other than a multi-lane road or a road with 2 or more lines of traffic)
$Â 75 plus 2 point: Driving in the right lane on a multi-lane road with a signposted speed limit more than 80 km/h (without an excuse)
$504 plus 2 point: Depositing or dropping injurious matter on a road
$294 plus 1 point: Following too closely to the vehicle in front
$100 plus 2 point: Making a U-turn at an intersection with traffic lights
$Â 75 plus 2 point: Increasing speed when being overtaken
$378 plus 3 point: Failing to leave 1m when passing a bicycle in a 60km/h or less speed zone
